Challenge
IBS triggers are highly individual, with each person diagnosed having slightly different food and/or lifestyle triggers for the condition. Figuring out what these specific triggers are is a lengthy process made easier by things like low FODMAP diets and modern breath testing technology, however these generalised methods do not work for all diagnosed persons. Therefore, this project calls for the creation of a system, product and/or artefact to be used in the early stages of an IBS diagnosis to assist patients in determining a personalised, comprehensive list of triggers for their IBS.

Solution
After communicating with my close family memeber and engaging in online medical research and chat platforms, it was determined that a nutrition pack which combines technology and printed media would meet the needs of these newly-diagnosed patients. This allows for highly personalised and accurate information about the individual’s IBS through informative data collected from a smart device, as well as personal tracking through a journal.
As a part of this solution, I created the journal component to present as my assessment piece. It aims to provide key insights, encourage documentation of changes, and give advice for wellness. This would be communicated though a tabulated physical book with a focus on the user experience and creating and engaging product for daily use.
As a result, this conceptual journal was produced with key areas, including IBS information, early navigation, food elimination and reintroduction, and weekly low-FODMAP recipes. The bulk of the journal comprises of daily journaling and weekly check-ins for self-informated data regarding foods eaten, mood, symtoms and space for notetaking. At the end of the journal is space for jotting down confirmed triggers and alternative foods, favourite recipes and note of any other external factors that contribute to their personal IBS.
To create an interactive experience, sticker sheets are also tucked into the front cover of the booklet. In situations where the tirgger list is unique, cards have been created for users to write down their triggers to inform food preparers in resturant or eating-out settings.
Impact
Though unknown to me, the tutor in this university unit also had IBS. She related greatly to the stuggles outlined in the brief and persona exploration, and impressed as to the level of care and detail I had included in my proposed solution.
I recieved full marks in this assignment and I hope to one day be able to publish this journal for real-world use to help those like my family member and tutor who struggle with the highly individual experience of IBS triggers.
