Signage in black and white that features expressive personified 'hands' that point to map areas and directions

Challenge

This project was opened up to stuidents in their final year at univeristy from both the Visual Communication adn Product Design majors. This project started with a site visit the the Brisbane Powerhouse to inspect the current signage adn wayfinding systems from things like seat assignemnts, wall plaques, overhead signs, elevator signs and freestanding signs that directed foot traffic. Considerations for this project was the limited budget, the space being inside a heritage building, language and visibility, low-lighting atmosphere and making it feel part of the Brisbane Powerhouse experience.

Solution

The solution was a wayfinding system with a personality - Mr Power. This allowed the fun, experince-focused venue to have a wayfinding system to match. These arch-shaped signs have high-contrast black and white directions, with a bit of quirkiness displayed with the hands directing to different venue rooms and spaces within the Brisbane Powerhouse. These hands were developed from the Brisbane Powerhouse logo of a looping B. This idea was explored in all use cases - freestanding, hanging, hand-out stands and temporary event signage.

Simplified versions of the arch shape are used for smaller use-cases such as elevator signs, seating numbers and table numbers.
